Drywall And Plaster

The two materials which are good materials for walls are drywall and plaster. By learning more about each of these, you will be better equipped to decide what is best for your home. Plaster is a material that was used years ago for building walls. The plaster was applied in layers which was a time-consuming process best left to experienced professionals. Upon the invention of drywall, plaster became an outdated material. More and more homeowners turned to the ease and convenience of drywall. Drywall is quite different from plaster in several ways.

First of all, drywall is constructed from a gypsum board core wrapped in either paper or fiberglass matting. It is easily hung using nails or screws attached to the wall studs. A screwgun can make the installation of drywall even easier. After the drywall is secured to the studs, the seams are filled in with tape and joint compound. Once the compound is fully dry the walls can be primed and painted. Sometimes prior to priming it is necessary to sand them for a smooth, uniform texture. There are lots of resources online and in books that can take you through each step of the drywall installation process.

On the subject of texture, both materials can be texturized. Plaster can be shaped and molded by artisans into a variety of designs and textures before it dries. Drywall, on the other hand, can be texturized with a spray gun. Texture material for drywall comes in dry foam form, and is mixed with water. The mixture is then sprayed onto the walls and left to dry. You can apply several coats, however you will need to let each coat dry before spraying on the next. Overnight drying time is recommended for best results.

When choosing between drywall and plaster, you should weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each material. One advantage of drywall is its ease of installation and price. However one advantage of plaster is that it is so much harder and more durable than drywall. You may want to study more about home improvement or even consult with a professional contractor before making any final decisions. A professional contractor can also install your drywall or plaster if you choose. While drywall can be a do it yourself process plaster walls are more difficult.
