Drywall Finishers

Professional drywall finishers come in after the drywall itself has been hung and finish the job. Drywall is made from a gypsum board core, wrapped in either fiberglass or paper. Finishers apply tape and joint compound to the seams between the drywall sheets to make them smooth and perfect. While many homeowners do their own drywall projects, they often find that the finishing process isn't as easy as it looks. Many professional finishers, or tapers as they are sometimes called, have years of training and experience.

In addition to taping the seams and applying joint compound, finishers may also sand, seal and prime the walls in preparation for paint. Some homeowners want textured drywall. This is achieved by spraying the walls with a texture gun and a foam like material mixed with water. The level of texture you'll get depends on how many coats are applied and the size of the foam particles. Other homeowners may want wallpaper over their drywall. This is a bit different because it can damage the wall if not done correctly.

When preparing drywall for wallpaper, a finisher will apply a primer made especially for this purpose. That way when the wallpaper is removed it won't tear the paper on the drywall. While most people don't ask for wallpaper on top of drywall, some do. Finishers usually work indoors but may occasionally work outdoors. If you are interested in a career of this type, you will need to apprentice with a professional following high school graduation. After a certain number of apprenticeship hours you will be qualified to work as a finisher. There may also be classroom time required depending on your training program.

You might be wondering what drywall finishers earn. The pay depends on the level of experience, geographic location and various other factors. Although a beginning finisher may start out at a low level of pay they can move up to higher wages over time. You can learn more about working as a drywall finisher by consulting with individuals in this career field or even doing online research. Because there will always be a need for skilled drywall finishers, this is a reasonable career option for anyone who wants to work in the construction industry.
