You will need to use a primer and sealer especially made for the application of wallpaper. These products are water based and form a strong protective barrier against your wallpaper adhesive. You can use them on plain drywall, painted drywall or even on top of existing wallpaper. These sealants can even be colored to match your wallpaper, which can help save the look of your walls if there is any spreading at the seams or cracks in the paper. Another advantage of these sealants is that they slow down adhesive drying time, which gives you more time to make sure the wallpaper is positioned perfectly. These priming and sealing products can be purchased at most any hardware or home improvement store where wallpaper and drywall supplies are sold.
