Paperless Drywall

While most drywall is covered in heavyweight paper, there is paperless drywall on the market these days. As its name suggests, paperless drywall is made without paper. It is instead covered with a fiberglass material that is highly resistant to moisture damage, mold and mildew. Along with these properties, you will notice the texture of this drywall to be rougher than drywall covered with paper. From a distance it looks identical, however up close you can see the rougher texture of the fiberglass.

The resistance to moisture is one reason many people end up choosing fiberglass covered drywall. It is ideal for areas where moisture levels are high like in basements and bathrooms. In addition to being more resistant to moisture it is also a bit tougher and more resistant to damage also. You will find it more convenient than paper covered drywall also because you will not need to install a vapor barrier in high moisture areas. A vapor barrier helps keep out moisture and is used with traditional paper drywall.

Of course there are some drawbacks to fiberglass drywall as well. It is more difficult to repair, and you will usually need extra coats of joint compound to smooth the wall. Also during installation the particles may irritate the eyes, nose or throat. Therefore, proper protective gear must be worn when putting up fiberglass drywall. Paper drywall is easier to find, easier to repair and easier to obtain. It also costs less. Of course paper drywall isn't always the best choice. It all depends on your particular situation.

As you can see, there are both advantages and disadvantages of paperless drywall. Before making a decision regarding this issue, consider the various factors involved. For example, the room in which you are installing the drywall will make a difference. While paper covered drywall would be ideal for your living room, you may want fiberglass drywall for your bathroom or basement. To learn more about drywall installation, check out some books on the subject or do some online research. You may even want to speak with a contractor if you can't find the information you need. Because drywall installation is such a common do it yourself project, there are plenty of how-to resources out there for homeowners.
