Pro Drywall

Drywall is the name used to describe a construction material made from gypsum board wrapped in either heavyweight paper or fiberglass. It has replaced the labor intensive plaster walls of the past and offers many benefits for homeowners. Drywall is fairly simple to install, depending on your aptitude with construction projects, of course. You can choose pro drywall installation, or you can try to do the job on your own. If you go the do-it-yourself route recruiting a helper or two can make things easier.

For those unfamiliar with drywall installation, a brief introduction to the process is in order. Drywall is nailed directly to your wall studs, after which it is taped. Contrary to how it sounds, tape is not actually used. Joint compound is a putty type material that is smoothed over the seams of the drywall sheets. After it dries, it can be sanded to make it smooth and even. Although this sounds fairly straightforward and simple, it can get challenging if you are just not the do-it-yourself kind of person. If you decide to hire a pro, there are some guidelines you should follow.

First, shop around and find multiple listings for construction contractors. Although you may want to start by looking in your local Yellow Pages you might also want to search the Internet. Many professional contracting companies have sites where you can view examples of their work and find out more about them. Always make sure any contractor you are considering is properly licensed and bonded. Many contractors will come to your location and give you a free estimate for the job, which is definitely helpful if you're shopping for the best price. Another part of every estimate should be a timeline that tells you when you can expect the project to be completed.

Once you've investigated a few contractors and received estimates, you will be better equipped to choose the right company for your needs and your price range. If you decide against pro drywall and want to do it yourself, there are plenty of online resources and books on the subject that can walk you step by step through the process. Hanging drywall is a project that ranges from easy to challenging depending on your level of experience and the size of the room you are working with.
